Silicone taste transfer from kitchen utensils

I love using silicone spatulas. Their flexibility means I am able to scrape every last drop of cake batter, etc out of my mixing bowl. I also had silicone tongs which I thought were great as they wouldn't scratch my frying pans, and a innovative silicone colander that folded flat to fit neatly in a drawer.
As time went by, all of these things started leaving a noticeable taste on the food I was preparing with them. I could smell it on the silicone, and it didn't go away through washing by hand or in the dishwasher. Making a bicarb paste and letting it sit on the offending items didn't help either.
I have thrown out the spatulas and tongs, but the colander was a gift, and I'm not sure it will be easily replaced. I don't want to re buy things after a couple of years, and am hoping someone has a solution. I have silicone cake 'tins' and other items hat have not developed this 'fault' yet, and I wish to prevent it!!
