Probably the best way to get a hold of an old console is your acquaintances or their friends. Someone you can actually reach, if something is wrong with the console. I bought a Dreamcast from a friend's friend and it came with faulty controller port. So I called my friend and told him I can't keep this. The 3 of us got together and the guy managed to actually fix it in front of me and apologised he didn't check if the console was actually proper before selling it.

I've bought a load of second hand games from Game. Never had any problems with them.

CEX, Cash Convertors etc.... dont seem to care too much about the condition of the games they buy aslong as they can make a "profit" so have had a couple of frisbees from those before. Game on the other hand, most 2nd games i've picked up have been flawless.

Would never buy a 2nd hand console.

Was in GAME store at weekend, they wanted £139 for a preowned 3DS XL which had seen better days. Compared to Argos and internet offers that was a poor deal by anyone's standards. 3DS instore at HMV at moment is £99. They also had 3DS XL at £99 last week in some stores, but these went quick.

CEX are the same with super hyped up prices. I had a gift voucher for Game and got some pre-owned Blu-ray games. Neither of which have played properly and good luck taking them back. Tried and failed miserably. :( They are now used as frizbees :)

Waiting for game prices to fall is a good strategy like others have commented. They do fall - look at the price of Arkham Origins now across all platforms.

I understand that getting something for about £50 less or more can look like a great deal but the mantra is if it seems to be good to be true....

We got a "second hand" Wii a couple years back from Game. I use quotes because the only thing second hand about it (aside from the good price) was that the box had been opened. The Wii and all its bits were still in their original packaging!

From what we were told, when chatting with the sales guy, you can look through their second hand console stock and choose which one you'd like.

Console - no. I'm a stickler for a warranty plus I like someone I've bought to be mine. My PS3 is 4 and half now and been a part of the furniture ever since. Easily done a few thousand hours of gaming

Games - not fussed. I will generally buy new if there is an offer (like the GameStop FIFA 14 one last year...release day for under £20. Or Skylanders Giants for a tenner last month) but generally it's used. I buy/sell games to someone who also plays them for trophies at our costs and it all balances out there. Pick some bundles up on eBay too...but PS+ is always there!

All I do is trade in unwanted games for pre-owned games. I cannot remember the last time I bought a new game on the release day. !!!!!! paying jumped up prices. Waited so long for release, I can stand to wait an extra month for the price to drop dramatically.

And that £1 to protect discs is a small con. I have never had a scratched disc yet. Seriously how messy and dirty are people that their discs end up so scratched that they can't play?

I find that Zoverstocks, who sell on Amazon are very good on price and used games look new. I have lots of second hand games, mainly from Amazon and a few from Game.

However, I've avoided Game since buying a 'new' pc game, which had their used game seal and was covered in figure prints. CS told me it was new but it was store policy to empty boxes for display (I've never seen this with budget games), so I returned it ... and was sent the same game as a replacement (I knew this because of marks on disk and case).
