Sky+ box 'recovery failed' solution

I have a white Pace Sky+ box which developed the Recovery Failed error when I tried to access the planner.
Other symptoms included;
- an electronic clicking when the box was starting up after a power down,
- the power button remaining green when the box was put onto standby,
- no 'anytime' option in the TV guide.
I tried several power down/restarts in accordance with several other forums online.
I then learnt of a way to do a forced software update which I was told would correct the problem, and it did.
- Power down the box by disconnecting the mains supply.
- Press and hold the 'backup' button on the front of the box.
- Restore the power to the box keeping the backup pressed until the 'message', 'remote', and 'online' lights become illuminated, (approx 30 secs).
- The TV screen should go black with a message about the software update progress, release the backup button.
- Leave the update to finish (approx 10 mins), after which the box will perform a restart.
