Worrying Car Problem!

On Friday, I was driving on a duel carriageway and my engine cut out at 40mph, I lost all power and ground to a halt and the car would not restart.
Called RAC, they could not find a fault as their diagnostics machine was unable to connect with the car…But surprisingly it restarted, I top it up with fuel on the way home and has sice been working okay, till this morning, this time, engine cut out but restarted and would not pick up speed? Speedometer showing 35mph, but really doing 20!
Will be taking it the garage first thing tomorrow morning…What could possible be wrong???
Anyone else had a similar problem?

Hi.
Not a mechanic but have you got a warning light on your dashboard that may be linked to your EMS.

I think you may be better taking it to a mechanic. My knowledge is very limited and I think you may need more info than i can provide.
Sorry

I had a similar problem with my old Vauxhall Carlton last year. It just started to cut out, steering lock and that was it (scary on a bend/roundabout). There is a way of doing diagnostic checks yourself on old Vauxhall's and it was the idle sensor speed control valve - they get full of oily rubbish.
OH took it out and gave it a good clean. It sorted it out but was warned by a mechanic friend it might only last for a month or so.
Car failed MOT miserably so never got the opportunity to find out how long it would havelasted, but that was the problem with mine.
Might be worth checking the crankshaft sensor as that also came up on my fault finder.

Yes a Rover engine and No creamy deposits...0 -
Probably not the same at all but my car started stalling at speed and eventually took it to the garage as wanted to sell it. It turned out it was a sensor that was telling the car that the water was at minus something. £72 later and it's running like a dream. Have you got a reliable mechanic you can take it too? Hope you sort it soon.January budget

I've got a Suzuki Grabd Vitara 05 plate and this happened to me. It was also the sensor of some sort (not mechanically minded... sorry). My car was under warrantly so took it back they gave it a good clean and it's worked like a dream ever since. Hope its nothing serious.0

How full was the fuel tank when it cut out? I had a very bizarre problem a few months ago when the tank got to 1/4 full or less it would cut out. The AA tried telling me it had run out of fuel but I knew it hadn't.
In the end the garage took the whole petrol tank out & found the little cap/flap bit of the neck of the tank had broken off & was floating around in the tank. No problem when the tank was full-ish, but once it dropped lower, the pesky little thing was blocking the fuel hose. One in a zillion chance.............but you never know.0 -
Muck in your petrol tank, have you let it run low on petrol lately? gets sucked through & blocks the pipework somewhere, then shifts and bingo! it goes again. Happened to mine, it's a possibility.0

Don't know really but if its cutting out is could be fuel injection problems, Are you aware of Head Gasket problem?
