Pre 1998 student loan

Hi

I have four student loans from the years 1995-1998 still outstanding.
I have always had them deferred since gross income has never been above the yearly threshold.

When my next deferment ends in April 2014 I will now be 50 years of age and according to

On the student loan repayment page on this site :

It states that for loans taken out with Higher Education start date
Between 1990-1997 and loan take out age under 40, then the loan/debt will be wiped once age of 50.

I am taking this info as factually correct if its on Martin's site.

Has anyone been in similar situation and got debt / loan wiped.

Who would I need to contact or write to as I don't presume Student Loans Company will just wipe it without me pressing the case.

Secondly, I have a good credit ratin and just wondered if this would be affected. I've never had to make a payment as have always been officially deferred soobviously I have never missed a payment.

Any advice greatfully received.

Thanks

tony

The student loan repayment website also states that your studet loan may be cancelled in those circumstances. http://www.studentloanrepayment.co.uk/portal/page?_pageid=93,3867066&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

I'd probably contact them in the first instance to see what you need to do, if anything.

Old style student loans don't appear on your credit file unless you miss payments, so the loan shouldn't appear on your credit file or affecting your ability to get credit.

  • Thanks for the quick reply.
I'd read that on their site too but just kind of wondered how forthcoming they'd be with info :)

This year when I'm aged 49 they were a lot more awkward with me getting a deferment even though I had all the necessary paperwork and proof of income from Inland Revenue, so just wondered if my fast approaching 50th had anything to do with it ?

Thanks for info on credit rating as that's always been really good so was just worried in case it did get 'written off' but could appear as an unpaid debt.

    Thanks for help
