Oven or simmer?

I need to do a stew for 2.5 hours at 150 C in the oven. My oven is electric.

Is this cheaper than simmering on a gas stove for 2.5 hours?

Nobody can say for sure, as we don't know how much gas or electricity it will use.

Electricity is more expensive than gas, but............

Your oven will use it's maximum amount of electricity to heat the oven to the temp you need, then it will switch off, or go right down and only use enough electricity to replace the heat that escapes through the top and sides of your oven.

The gas hob will use the same amount of gas constantly for 2.5 hours.
  • I have no idea, I always use my slow cooker for stews etc :)
I would have thought it may be cheaper in the oven though x

I'd choose the oven as then you don't need to watch it.

Definitely worth buying a SC if you like stews. I'm told they use the power equivalent of a light bulb.
  • If your oven is on for that length of time you can utilize another shelf to cook something else for future use. I keep a list of items that cook at different temperatures to make the most of oven use.
For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.
