mortgages for non UK residents?

My son, who is a British citizen, has had to work in the EU since graduating in 2009- no jobs here.
He still holds an HBOS bank account which he uses when visiting, but is not on the electoral roll.
He wants to purchase a property here as he intends to come back as soon as he can find work here. In the meantime, it would be a buy to let basis.
However, HBOS (with whom he has held an account for over 10 years) won't give him a mortgage because he is not a UK resident.
Is it possible to get a mortgage if you are not a UK resident, or is this a hard and fast rule?
Any advice appreciated, many thanks.

it sounds more like a hard and fast HSBC rule!
Yes you can get a mortgage as a non resident, but it is not easy.

Surely better to find work then decide where to live on a permanent basis.0
