What a pickle!!!

Hi Everyone i'm after some help. I do apologise this is going to sound like a bit of a rant haha.

Right:
I currently live in a 2 bed house with my BF. Our house outgoings come to about £850 all together. So i put £400 into the house and he puts £450.

I also have a dreaded catalogue. My parents paid the majority off for me but from £2,500 i now only have £137 to go!!!!:T So i dedicate around £100 each month to that. I have my own phone bill (around £30), i pay my car insurance monthly aswell. All in all my bills roughly come to £630 a month. I have a zero hours contract at work with a shocking pay rate £6.39 an hour. Therefore i never know how much i am earning. I am trying my best to save each month but i end up spending it on card making things/fuel/ general bits and bobs. So i never end up saving and i always end up overdrawn by at least £100.

I know my bills are always paid religiously but its the rest that im really reckless with. Can someone give me some advice on this. Its beginning to cause problems between me and my BF now and also relationships with my family are starting to break.

  • Not knowing how much income you will be getting is a total pain and makes budgeting very difficult. I am in business and am in the same position. These days, a lot of people are as employers hire through agencies / "self employment" and zero hours contracts. So you have my sympathy there.

But you say you are paying £100 off the catalogue and only have £137 left to pay. That means it will be paid off in two months. Just don't buy any more - if they keep calling you to tell you about 20% discounts and so on (mine do!) just say you don't want anything at the moment. Even ask them to stop calling you. I bet it's clothes you are buying and if you're anything like me I bet you've already got lots that you don't wear. Just stop buying! That's £100 a month you will be able to put towards other things.
  • Hi Loulabelle!
Can you keep a spending diary? I know a lot of people on here find that if they dont want to write it down, it's because they know it's non essential so they shouldn't be buying it!
The other thing you could do is on payday transfer ove rmoney to various pots. You could have your bills account, your savings account, petrol pot and whatever you have left is yours... that way you can only spend what you have!
