HBOS Mortgage Missing Details

My mortgage is with HBOS. This morning i received a letter from them stating my details were on the disk that failed to reach the credit reference agency. Now they have offered to register me free with CIFAS, but what exactly is CIFAS and do i then have to pay each and every year to have this. Also i'm actually quite worried about this whole situation and if HBOS are offering CIFAS then there must actually be more of a risk than they hare prepared to admit at this point in time. So what exactly could happen with this disk going missing and also what should HBOS do about this is anything, i'm more worried about fraud than compensation. There must be an awful lot of people in this position as it has taking this long to send the letters out from when it hit the news.

I suggest that you contact HBOS and get things clarified, for your own satisfaction and peace of mind.

This will help to explain who CIFAS are, hopefully someone who has more info will be along later to answer more of your questions.0

I work for Halifax, apparently there's minimal risk that the disc could be used for any fraud, so theyre just trying to cover all the bases just in case....0

Thank you for the replies. I'm going to contact the bank and see what hey say over phone, i not happy about this and i am worried. For years now Ive shredded everything so my details do not go amiss, but, then a business such as this can be so careless as to 'lose' information. Yes, it could have been lost in the Post but it could also have been taken by someone who this time struck gold, and i cannot understand why a bank does not send its data/information in a far more secure maner0
