Dental hospital in UK.

Options
I think, I need some implants as I cannot chew properly due to some missing back teeth. I cannot afford the treatment and was told to go to Hospital and they may deal with it, I don't know which hospital though.
Any one with info please help, thanking you in advance.
This is for London area.

I think you would have to be referred by your dentist, I'd go back and ask.

Dental implants are not available on the nhs except for a very few conditions e.g. oral cancer, trauma or congenitally missing at least eight teeth(ie you were born missing eight adult teeth). Even then in each case the hospital has to apply for individual funding.

You would not qualify under this criteria for implants so will either have to pay for them yourself or ask your dentist about alternatives to fill the space.

We have a Dental Hospital here in Liverpool, it's many many years since i went there but at the time it was a walk-in service, but 'cos of that there were long waits.

I have just one front tooth on a plate which i hardly ever wear 'cos it's uncomfortable to eat and can't be noticed anyway. I asked my dentist once about an implant and he said it may loosen to tooth at either side and advised me not to bother, he said to persevere with the plate and you get more use to it.

  • There is a dental facility at The Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel. I'm not sure if they still have a walk-in service any more but you could always contact them to find out.

Many years ago I knew a few people who went to Guys Hospital near London Bridge station and would have fairly routine dental treatment carried out for free by students under the supervision of trained dentists. Might be worth looking into this -

This sounds more like he's describing a bridge or a denture!

Unless there are specific conditions to do with you that the dentist was describing, providing an implant is generally the option that does the least damage to the surrounding teeth.

They are an expensive option though, and as Brook said earlier, it is not done on the NHS except in certain very specific conditions, and even then it's difficult.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
