Anyone change from oil to gas in the last year?

Hi - I currently have oil central heating working off a three year old condensing boiler. I do save about a third of the cost on my previous oil bill using the old style boiler, however I'm wondering would gas provide even more savings? With last years cold winter I spent around £1500 on oil. I now have a gas connection at the house. Just wondering if anyone who has changed from oil to gas is making significant savings or if its not worth the bother considering I have a pretty modern oil boiler.

I changed last August, in the last year I have paid £330 into a pre-pay meter. I have about 6 weeks worth left, I use it for heating and water.
When I had oil I was using 1200l a year and that was being frugal. Also I used my immersion for hot water and so my electric is now£2/week cheaper.

We have never had such a warm home since I got the gas in. At least four people in my street have changed and we all agree.....its a no-brainer! (especially if you get a grant)

Gas really is a no brainer. Your payback will be longer though as you have a pretty efficient oil boiler.
  • Interesting question. I put gas in last year as my old oil boiler was knackered - so far so good, it seems reasonable enough

However.. I use an engineer who fixes both oil and gas boilers - he has oil at home. When I asked him why he said that there is little difference in efficiency between a modern gas an oil boiler. He would change to gas for the convenience when his boiler was done, but not worth the while changing an efficient boiler while its working fine.

Probably true. Do the modern oil boilers provide hot water on demand?
  • Thanks for the replies. The main draw for me is that it appears gas is always going to be cheaper than the oil - (about 29% at the moment) - the oil price fluctates throughout the year, but the gas price seems to be set for a year which gives a bit more certainty. Also my gas meter is PAYG so I can top it up when I choose. I'm leaning towards changing.

It might be more effective to look at the insulation in your house if your burning a disproportionate amount of fuel.

Theres lots of information in the public domain on what works and what doesnt.

    Great advice.
  • Have double glazing, good loft insulation and I've insulated under the floors. Thermostatic valves on the rads and wireless room stat to control the boiler. Problem is I live in a 1925 bungalow with no cavity walls. Ceilings are intricate and I would spoil the look of the house if I tried to line the interior walls and it would cost an arm and a leg to insulate the outside walls and would end up detracting from the look of the place. I don't mind paying for the fuel to heat the place - its just I want to get more heat for less money.
