Hi, I read that carrots don't like recently manured soil. Excess nitrogen can cause carrots to form multiple roots or go hairy. Could this be the cause?

Also heavy clay soil may force carrot roots to grow crooked. Adding well broken down leaves and well-rotted compost to next year’s carrot patch may help next year's crop. Carrots do particularly well in light (sandy) soil.


If you do add manure or rich compost to your soil, the advice is to do so in autumn, then let it overwinter before planting carrots in the spring. Carrot roots also will get hairy in waterlogged ground.




Root-knot nematodes may cause deformed carrots and can be verified with a soil test. You might have to solarize (treat soil with the sun’s heat using plastic sheeting in the summer) or rotate your carrots to another area next time.


Seems that growing straight carrots is not a simple thing!

:D:D I have cats and talk to them way too much ......real people annoy me :D:D If I didnt have to work to pay for the cat's food I doubt I would ever talk to another adult except to explain their own DTD policies!
