Recycling from council recycling yards

Options
Recently i started a major hobby project that made me think about recycled materials. Seeing how quite a lot of good things are thrown out and carted off to local council recycling yards i'd like to go forage for what i need. Is it possible to do without greasing a person that overlooks operation of the yard ? What are the legalities of recycling recycled electronic/furniture/glass(windows/panes)?

I'm mostly looking for timber and some electronics, two of my hobbies collided recently - Woodworking and computer building/modding. Also i am building a workshop for myself so quite a lot of things are needed that can be got from recycling yards.

Anyone with advice on this ?

P.S. I'm located in Northern Ireland, if that's relevant. Armagh/Dungannon/Cookstown recycling yards are of most interest.

P.P.S. I'm also looking for other options, but annoying private persons and begging for things is not my cup of tea...(then again i may need to reevaluate this)...

    Dont get me started.....

it used to be easy to grease a palm etc but i am afraid, well round my local tips its impossible . security cameras and fear of the sack by emploees.it makes me very annoyed at the stuff that is dumped but most council tips are run by private comps and there £££s in any waste. oil paper timber metal eletrics rags. to name just a few in the past i have loads of stuff but alas no more. had half a dozen dysons in the past and i mend mine out of them not bought a hoover for 15years and one only needed a fuse in the plug:rotfl: people have even scalled the fence to remove items and have been done for theft.
they use the excuse its because of health and saftey etc regarding recycling etc and personal injury. old furniture window frames were made of exotic woods makes my blood boil being a woodworker seeing this carted away for burning at a power station or chipped:mad:

    :):):) rant over
    3.55kw 2 systems 2.3 se 1.25 sw installed may 2011 and oct 2011..

I have never been mis sold anything but i have bought a few things i didnt need!

It depends on the council. At some tips, you're allowed to buy stuff for a nominal sum, at others, it's not allowed, often citing H&S.
So the best way to find out is to ask at your local tip.

Also, have you signed up to Freecycle or Freegle? Checked Gumtree? You'd be surprised what people offer on those, and old pc kit is often offered. You might even find a garden shed.

Have you considered double glazing companies? When I built my shed, I popped round to a few and asked if I could help myself to their 'rubbish' pile. They are going to have to pay to tip it all, so were very keen for me to take stuff. Got several external wood doors of the right size, and also took a few of the wrong size, as they had 6 lever deadlocks and keys in them - just to strip down.

Also got several DG units that had been replaced due to condensation failure. Didn't matter for my shed, but added extra security compared to SG.

You might even get lucky with entire units (including frames) that didn't fit, or were built to wrong specs. I spent a whole day trying to work out if I could make use of a 7ft by 5ft unit with central window, and side openers - offered to me for free, just couldn't work it in to anything! :(

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.
  • I already got 3x windows and 1x single door. All DG. My mum recently replaced hers so insted of tipping it i'll be reusing them. Still looking out for sources of timber...
