Building Reg's for removing supporting wall?

We are soon going to have the supporting wall taken down between the dining and living room and a chimney breast taken out.
The builder mentioned something about building regs and how we'd sort it nearer the time.
Can anyone explain what this entails and the sort of cost this involves please?

You will need B Regs approval to make structural alterations such as these to ensure that the steel beams which will need to be inserted to support the walls above are of the correct size. A structural engineer can do the necessary calculations which have to be submitted to the Building Control Dept at your local council. Obviously there will be fees involved but not sure how much - probably best to speak to Building Control for their advice. This can all take a few weeks so if you're wanting to start the work soon best to get the ball rolling now.0
