IOSH / NEBOSH courses

Since my knee operations a couple of years ago I want to return to work in my field of expertise. I have been on ESA and in the WRAG where I attend interviews at the JCP. These Job Centres are a waste of time space and money. I have never had to encounter them before and thank god for it.
I am a plasterer by trade and 57 years of age, my knowledge of the building trade and construction is excellent but I cannot apply my trade because of the knee problems. I have been applying for jobs such as supervision positions for which I have vast experience without even a reply. Most of the jobs insist on a Health and Safety qualification such IOSH or the most difficult NEBOSH.
My latest interview at the JCP I asked about courses but the interviewer said they did not fund courses unless you are about to take up a position which stipulates such qualification. I told her the job stipulates such qualification is required to be even considered. Absolute useless.
So I now need this qualification to be even considered for applied jobs, are there any funded courses available to people like myself? I live in the North west.
Kind regards.

  • I'm sure there will be people with some knowledge of them qualifications who may be able to help more.

However, I'd suggest contacting your local college and see what they can offer you. Colleges usually have a range of various courses which you can get free or cheaper if you're on benefits. Even if you can't do that there may be something similar, that will look good on your CV or perhaps something else you might like to do (maybe something that could get you into another trade).

Hello, sounds like a catch 22 situation, hope I can help a bit.

In general the reply above is I think the nearest you are going to get to a reasonably funded course, especially in the kind of professional area you are looking at.

Some links that may be useful:

    https://www.nebosh.org.uk/

    http://www.rrc.co.uk/

The other cost effective thing you could try is by detailing in your application your "equivalent experience" to the desired courses backed up with examples, also your willingness to work towards one if appointed.

Or maybe enrol on one and state you are currently working towards, then hope you get a job to fund completion.

Sorry not to be able to help further, good luck in your job and course hunting! :)
  • Check with a local further education college for part time courses , a number run day release type course especially for NEBOSH NGC, and you may not have to pay tuition or exam fees if you in receipt of benefits- check the college policy.

If you put your post code up I don't mind checking for you
  • Absolute tremendous advice and I thank you.
    Regards Jeff.
  • NEBOSH can be funded though your local FE College that delivers it providing they have access to ESF (European Social Fund) SSU (Skills Support for Unemployment). You need to be referred by JCP but it is best to speak to the college about it first as the amount of money they will get for it is slightly less than they would charge for the course so it is a commercial decision on whether you can go on the course.

It cant be funded through the 'normal' college funding (SFA Contract) so it will need to be project funding of this type.
