The vandal is legally responsible for the damage.
The repairs are the responsibility of the landlord's insurance, which is what the policy is there for.
You will be telling me next, that if the company employed by the Council, to do the Gas Safety Inspections, park one of their vans on the driveway, while carrying out the inspection, and a passing car backs into it and drives off, the tenant would be liable for that too.0 -

If they weren't present, they wouldn't know the vandalism occurred, so couldn't have known the premises were insecure.
If I go on holiday for a fortnight and, on the second day, there's a break-in, and nobody reports it, then it'll remain insecure for a further 12 days, but I'm not responsible for leaving premises (I don't know to be insecure) insecure.
Or am I supposed to fly home, every evening, to check?0 -
Bob, we don't know, and the OP isn't telling us, so please, ease up on the assumptions and claims about responsibility. Until we find out more, you're just guessing!1. Have you tried to Google the answer?

Sorry not been able to reply, trying to deal with so many things lately!
We had a serious incident occur at my home, totally out of the blue and no fault of our own, CID were involved and advised us to leave the property. I rang the HA and was told we were not priority for being moved! we were at our wits end and moved out into my aunties house a few miles away, I called my housing manager and let them know exactly when we would be moving out, and left the house locked and fully secure, but I heard that the day we moved out, the locals including my neighbours trashed the place, so not my fault as I did everything possible to advise them of our departure.0 -
As another poster indicated, I'd ask them for a full breakdown of charges. Once you've got that, then deny liability
Did you write to inform the HA that you were leaving? If so, do you still have copies?
I personally cant see how you would be liable.... if you went on holiday for a month, and it happened then you wouldn't be liable!0 -
I spoke to HA and they are saying now that it is rent arrears for 2007?? Never been in arrears with rent and was on DD always paid when due. The HA have said they are sending out a statement and we can take it from there, but would I be able to trace bank records back to 2007, not sure will have to investigate it further. :mad:0

This is one of the reasons, why I pay my rent in cash, in person.
I have my rent cards, fully stamped, going all the way back, to the beginning of my tenancy.0
