Supermarket deliveries to another address ?

OH is changing jobs so we're planning our first holiday OK weekend away in ten years  I want everything to go like clockwork so it's stress free.

Years ago Iceland did home delivery from internet/phone orders and delivered stuff to my father in hospital. But apart from that, I've never ordered food to be delivered elsewhere, only to me.

Soo.. who does it please ? Did you get the food or have you got a horror story to tell of coming home from holiday and finding food rotting on your doorstep ?

Would I be better off calling into a supermarket on the way ? Do supermarkets still do booklets showing positions of their stores near main routes ? (Sainsbury's used to).

  • I know Tesco do it. I've never done it myself but my friend, when she's on holiday always does an online order before she goes and gets it delivered to her holiday destination which is usually a caravan at a holiday park. HTH

  • We went to Yorkshire on holiday this year and I had our shopping delivered the evening we arrived from Tesco, no problems. Just give yourself plenty of time between arrival and delivery in case you are delayed. They take your number anyway so would ring you if there was a problem.

I don't see how they could deliver to a holiday destination. When you log in to the store web site you are taken to the store that delivers to your home address. Any order you make will come from that store, so unless you are not going far for your holiday then they won't deliver it.

There may be a "change location" button on the site, but think of the security implications. Someone could hack into your account and have a load of groceries delivered to a camp site miles away from where you live. They'd be long gone before you found out.

On the other hand, you could have a load of groceries delivered to a camp site then claim it wasn't you.

It seems I may be wrong!

Just been on Tesco site and it has a facility to add another delivery address, when you book a delivery slot.

I chose the address of a caravan site 350 miles away, because I know it and it was easy to look up the postcode for it. Caravan was even an option in the "type of building to deliver to" list.

I didn't hit the "use this address" button, so don't know what checks are made, but the option to deliver to another address is certainly there.

I'm just glad they don't have my card details!

I wonder, if they deliver to a holiday caravan park, you have to open the caravan door to prove you are staying there. Or can you get away with just putting a deck chair outside an unoccupied caravan and waiting for the delivery. "Just dump the groceries on the grass there mate, I'll put it inside after you've gone"
  • We did it recently with Sainsburys - no problem at all. I've also had gift shopping delivered by Tesco to a family member. As long as the billing address is correct to your payment address, the delivery address can be anywhere.

    Enjoy the holiday!
  • We will be staying in another part of the country in October and I have already added the "new" address to my Ocado details.

Great idea as we won't have to take food or rush out and buy stuff after we arrive.

With Ocado, you need to check if they deliver to the area you are going to and, as usual, you won't be able to place the order until around three weeks beforehand.

It's very common-plenty of people have second holiday homes or relatives they want to help out especially old people in winter or students (good way to make sure the money goes on food and not booze ;) )
They all offer it-no different to changing a delivery address to send a gift on Amazon

As for dumping it outside a caravan door.....why would they ? If I have a home delivery at home if I don't answer the door and sign for the order -they don't deliver-a caravan would be no different.

The fatal flaw with your scam would be that to be sitting outside the unoccupied caravan -you'd need to know an order had been placed at that particular caravan and time slot -so no refund would be forthcoming as it would be a very obvious scam.

Exactly, someone could hack into your account and place the order, so they would know it was coming.

Well a scammer wouldn't worry about that. And if you did do the scam on your own account I'm sure you could get the money back from your card.

I know they send you a confirmation email, but if you can change the delivery address you can change the email address too.

The issue of security is a valid one. My husband banks with an American bank which causes probs, but it's hot on security. If the email address used for dispatch/delivery notification is not the same as the email address held by the bank, it doesn't authorise the transaction.

The only delivery service I know of that does dump the shopping and go, without requiring a signature, is Abel & Cole. However they will hide it behind a wall/gate, leave in a porch, shed or garage and even hold a key for a communal hall - you just have to let them know.

The delivery idea could work for longer stays but Ocado has a £40 minimum order as does Sainsbury's I think. Waitrose is £50. There's no way we'll eat that much food Friday night to Sunday afternoon. Iceland minimum order is £25 but that's tricky cos we can't live on frozen fish and Viennetta all weekend. Abel & Cole and Riverford have minimum order of 12.50 but only deliver once a week and don't do slots. So unless they delivered on a Friday in the area, we'd be stuffed.

Looks like we'll be struggling round unfamiliar supermarkets on a Friday night looking for organic sausages
