I have been trying to reduce the amount of sugar and salt in my food I was quite alarmed at the amount of sugar that's in a tin of baked Beans, tinned Spaghetti, Brown sauce, tinned Tomatoes etc so I am looking for advice as to where the best place to buy them so far after looking on the Tesco website I have seen the beans which are quite expensive also the brown sauce once again quite expensive I suppose it's a price we have to pay to eat healthier food so I am looking for suggestions and advice please. Thanks

Well done you for thinking of your health and wanting to eat less sugar and salt.

For things like tomato ketchup and other table sauces I would suggest either reducing the number of times you eat them OR cut down on the amount you use.

For things like baked beans I'd suggest signing up for alerts on https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk and bying in bulk on special offer. Right now Sainsbury's has Heinz reduced sugar and salt baked beans in tomato sauce 415g on offer for 2 for 1.20 ie 60p a can until 01/10

The Heinz beans also come in packs of four and Sainsbury's has these on offer 4 x 415g cans for £2 to 01/10. Tesco has the four pack on offer as well for same price until 24/09

Alternatively, Heinz does the reduced sugar and salt baked beans in tomato sauce in 200g cans which are 45p at Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado and 53p  at ASDA.

Sainsbury's sells its' own reduced sugar and salt beans in tomato sauce in packs of four- 1.40 for 4 x 420g cans ie 35p a can. Also in 220g cans for 35p and 420g cans for 45p

Branston reduced sugar and salt baked beans 410g are 70p at Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado.

Have to say I'm not aware of any reduced sugar and salt tinned pasta at all. The only suggestions I can make for that would be to check whether Weight Watchers and Basic/Value pastas are lower in salt and sugar. Alternatively, you could buy smaller tins.

    Hope that helps xx

Have you considered making your own? I find all tinned/jar ready made/processed stuff tastes too salty and it's healthier if you know exactly what is in it.

Also cheaper to use dried pulses usually - 100g of dried beans is equal to 1 x 400g tin iirc. Could cook a batch and stick in the freezer if you usually buy the tinned varieties for convenience.

I don't eat brown sauce etc but again if you make your own you can at least control how much of each goes in it.

  • I have lost 4.5 stone and not bothered with getting the low sugar sauces as you aren't saving that much calories per serving. Plus its cheaper!

When making a spag bol or chilli, don't get jar sauces. A tin of chopped tomatoes with herbs and spices to taste is all you need.

Well done on losing 4.5 stones fionajbanana :T That's amazing ! If you're talking calories, then I agree with you, there's not a huge differential between standard version and reduced sugar and salt. But if, like viv0147 you want to cut back on the sugar and salt levels in your diet then for example the Branston reduced sugar and salt beans have 50% less than the standard ones.

But simply cutting back on the portion size of all these things would work too. Not everyone who wants to cut back on sugar and salt is wanting to lose weight. Cutting back on salt helps reduce blood pressure and cutting back on sugar helps reduce the risk of diabetes, to name just two reasons and there are loads more.

OH and I eat organic and OH does have a love for stuff which can be less than healthy. I told him if he could find an organic version he could have it. So that's yes to Weetabix, corn flakes, cottage pie, oven chips, pizza and baked beans and no to pot noodles, tins of all day breakfast, Gregg's pies and doughnuts.

So yup several ways to cut back on sugar and salt and it's a good thing to do if you can.
