What to do with videos?

We have a large number of videos (both home recorded and pre-recorded) which we want to get rid of. Will charity shops take them or should I just take them straight to the tip?

Depend's on the charity, we've only got 1 in the area that will take 'em, the rest just throw in the bin, so might be worth phoning them and asking, after all if they don't it's going save time for everyone.hth£71.93/ £180.000

If the charity shops don't want them you could offer them on Freegle/ Freecycle- there are people who make lovely things out of them, including notebooks from the cases and bags out of the actual tape! They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0

Thank you both. I'm intigued by the making of bags from video tape: how is it done? I have a relative who makes bags (from fabric) so. if I could point her in the direction of how to make them from video tape, I could offload them onto her!:D0

I'm intrugued by the bags, too, and would be glad to know how it's done. Can a smaller version also be made from cassette tape? My DH has a bunch of cassette tapes that no longer play properly (ancient relics, he's had them in the loft for years and years) and if I can make something out of them, I'd like to.:oIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0

The bags, as far as I am aware, can be made by knitting the tape. Can do the same with plastic bags cut into strips or 'plarn' as it's called.
Google plarn and loads will come up, I am sure.PAYDBX 2016 #55 100% paid! :j Officially bad debt free...don't count my mortgage.
Now to start saving...it's a whole new world!!0 -
Hello Flub
You could hold some back, remove tape from inside, and use as secret storage places for small bits, e.g. spare cash, meds, travel safe, pack in some bubble wrap so it doesn't rattle... Not that I have done this.

If you do take them to the tip, check if they collect them for recycling - some local authority sites do.0

I don't think there is a resale value for the home recorded tapes but my local charity accept the pre recorded ones as some go for quite good prices on e.b@y especially the D!sney ones. Worth checking.Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0

I looked into recycling tapes a couple of years ago and someone warned me about reusing the tape itself, but I can't remember why - something to do with a residue that was on the tape itself. I just threw mine away as I couldn't find anyone who wanted them and didn't want a dodgy residue everywhere. Sorry, you might have to Google why it's not necessarily safe0

some people use them on the alottment to help make a more bird-proof cover for fruit.
There's an old thread here that might help https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2697190
