Desktop PC gaming will always be my preferred option over consoles and laptop PCs, although I do game on both consoles and laptop PCs.

Desktop PCs are much more powerful than an equivalent priced laptop, even if you're not building your own desktop. They are far easier to upgrade, can be cleaned of dust build up easier, are easier to keep cool and thus longevity is increased. For gaming, they are just better than laptops.

Actual "gaming laptops", those specifically designed to game on, are little more than desktop replacements. They're uncomfortably heavy to carry around for any length of time and really are only served for those households where the space to fit a desktop PC case doesn't exist, although there's more and more options to build a decent specced desktop PC for gaming into a small form factor case such as a HTPC case.

I do have a laptop with a dedicated graphics card that I do some light gaming on but I wouldn't want it to be my only option for gaming. Screen size, sound quality, comfort level while operating are all lower than they are for a desktop for me and while I don't necessarily believe that better graphics quality improves a game, it can improve the experience and that's a big part of modern gaming for me.

I turned away from gaming laptops about 5 or 6 years ago. I had one at university that suited me for a little bit, but they just get too expensive. You might be able to upgrade them a little bit, but they become redundant very quickly, not too mention the components and actual computer cost more when matching spec for spec with a desktop PC. That's not even going into other potentially expensive avenues, like looking for proper cooling and airflow options for a gaming laptop (that will get very hot with heavy use).

Since the switch I've just been plugging bits in and out of a couple of cases and maintaining a gaming rig on a fairly modest budget. There's not a lot of point buying hyper expensive with the view to future proof it, as a lot of components drop in price after a few months.

If you want gaming on the move, I'd seriously recommend a Vita, 3DS or tablet/phone. The power required for proper PC gaming (self proclaimed "AAA" titles) simply costs too much in a laptop-sized package.
  • Yes but only due to pcs taking up so much space and having little kids its not ideal

Whats the point? Gaming laptops cost a fortune and have limited if any upgradability, get a console instead.
Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.

Mine cost £750 3+ years ago, and has lasted me well in that time.
I took it on holiday, and emigrated with it. I've been able to take it away when working away from home, and I can play games sat on the sofa whilst my wife watches TV, rather than being holed up in the spare bedroom.

I have a PS3 and an Xbox 360 as well, they all perform separate functions well.

Of course they're not ideal for all people, or as powerful as a desktop computer at the same price - but then we're not all the same and our needs aren't all the same.

No, I have changed from Xbox to PC.

However until I get a wired xbox controller to use on the PC I am still returning to the Xbox. :)

Laptops are pants for gaming, unless you spend a shedload on them.
