I've been wanting a sewing maching for a while, I asked for one from the OH for my birthday last week but didn't get one (why do they ask you what you want then completely ignore you!?)
Anyhow, I shouldn't moan because with my bday money I think i'm going to invest in this one on groupon: http://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/national-deal/groupon-goods-global-gmbh/27353901I'm a girlie whirlie despite my username0 -
I got a Brother X5 from my OH for Christmas last year. It was around £85 and has been excellent. I have made lots of craft things this year, not clothes yet but I would definitely recommend this machine.
This is the first sewing machine i have used since school and I have found it very easy to get to grips with. Definitely a good machine for a beginner. I expected it to take longer for me to learn how to use it but it really is lovely and simple.0 -
Hi, Group0n has an offer on for next few days for a sewing machine. Currently under £80 but usually about £180. Free delivery. Does different stitches, including quilting and also button holes. I have ordered one.
Also Am@zon has one by Brother on offer for about £50. A little bit more basic but still does loads. Also free delivery.

I have a Toyota, janome and Husqvarna so I go from low to hign price range. My Toyota cost 139.99 from argos and its sturdy and ive quilted on it many times it comes with loads of accessories and stitiches, my janome cost £400 second hand and I Love it, its so quiet but it computerised and it makes me shout lol then theres my Husqvarna which dad brought for me two weeks ago its an embroidery/ sewing machine and its the most awkward of machines and costing over 1200 I expected more. So I would go for the Toyota is reliable, it does everything, the feet are easily changed and customer services are always nice.I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!JUST LOVES THE O/S BOARD0

I'd go for a second hand, older Singer, where, perhaps, the owner can give you a demonstration.
When mine had a problem, last year, and I asked for quotes, two shops, which also sold new machines, told me it was well worth the cost of mending as modern ones are flimsy and don't last very long. Mine is 36 years old.0
