Peak time Manchester > London Euston

did you consider flying?
Peak times you can do MAN to LHR for less than £49 one-way (and you can book now), and I would say less chance of weather delays (assuming it doesn't snow of course, in which case the trains are likely to be as messed up as the airlines anyway)
I know a lot of the pre-9.30 trains usually cost a minimum of £50 to £65 between london and manchester, and it takes half the time to fly that route! First flights leave MAN around 6am, timetabled for 7am ish arrival but can expect to be at least 20 mins late due to Heathrow arrivals holding traffic. Then they will need to take the Tube/Piccadilly line into central London.
I would fly out and return in the afternoon by train (unless flying was cheaper or similar price, which often is in the middle of the day - can be less than £35)0 -

I asked on a previous thread about Reading Manchester fares
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4657577
It seems that tickets from Islip to Manchester are valid via London and are far cheaper particularly at peak times (post no 5)
Perhaps some of the experts here could confirm that this routing still works.
works fine.0 -
works fine.
"works fine" as in "is valid", not "you'll have no problem using this ticket".
I would advise ensuring you can explain why it is valid if intending to use this ticket (though as few people will know where Islip is it's less likely to be a problem than e.g. Manchester-Oxford).0 -

Hi, we did the same trip last week, flew down to LHR with Virgin Atlantic for £52 & came back on the train at 9.30pm for £12.50.
No way was I paying those ridiculous fares, the train should be no more than £50 return, its only a 2 hour journey.0 -

I didnt realise rail fares were set by how long the journey is."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
By that logic a really slow stopping train that takes a long-winded route would be more expensive as its more hours.0
