Finally getting cambelt done 2 years overdue

Options
Pheww

Feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Always made excuses, but decided to finaly pull my finger out and get the job done.

Have a 320 mile trip planned this weekend on the motorway so it was really important to get the job done.

Yeah I kinda wonder why a statement is being posted about it too. No request for help or anything just seems to be making a random blurb!

Anyway good on you LT for getting it done, they're pretty crucial and on many cars the belts aren't actually very strong - only a couple of mm thick and not very wide yet it manages to turn an entire engine for thousands of miles!

Out of interest, what car, and what's the mileage/ time recommendation for a cam belt?

the last stamp on the service book was 6 years ago at 58K miles. (40K interval).

I think the first cambelt is due at 60K and then subsequent belt jobs are required every 40K

I bought the vehicle last year at 98k miles. So it was already overdue by time by 1 year.

Wanted to get it done but didn't want to fork out £350 for the cambelt. (interval is 40K).

But got in touch with a good mechanic who is friends with my brother an could do the job for £270. Typical indy garage, under arches, long years of service, spread by word of mouth, has a lot of cabby clients so dependable. In fact doesn't even have a shop sign and located in back streets but my brother has used him for years and years.
  • 40k cambelt interval, is it a Vauxhall?

A properly-engineered car should be able to withstand such tardiness without issue.

It wasn't a GM Family II engine by any chance was it? That would be a brave move indeed to neglect of those :)

  • Am I right in thinking it hadn't had a service in 6 years?

With the M.Mouse tools they were going to buy not servicing it was probably a wise choice.

It would have been in a much worse state after servicing.
