I'd really recommend using fondant icing, it's ridiculously easy to use. If you do, pick up a plastic cake smoother, it does what it says on the tin and gives you a nice and smooth finish.
Edit: Ohhh, and also try to leave your crumb coat overnight to harden up. It's a royal pain in the proverbial to smooth fondant over squishy buttercream.0 -
