Past Employer Chasing Me Up For Old Expenses

Help!! I left my previous employer 11 months ago and as far as I am concerned all owings and expenses were settled before I left. This month I have received two letters the first polite, the second mildly threatening stating that I owe £170 from a £200 float that was provided back in 2003 and that they had 'forgotten' to deduct it from my final salary. There is no supporting evidence of this demand and my final wage slip does not help me in any way as it includes bonus payments, holiday pay etc. Can they really pursue me for this nearly one year after leaving? If so what evidence do they need to provide?

Thanks all

If your adamant you dont owe the money then make them PROOVE you do.
Dont worry about threatening letters im sure this is just a bullying tactic.

Contact them and advise that aslong as they can proove fully that you owe the money, you will pay it, if not- tough!

Ask them for all documentary evidence as you do not have it & this is the first you've heard of it

    then call ACAS quick

    Good luck!

If they are able to provide evidence of this outstanding money, then you will be liable to pay it back. They are able to chase this money for up to six years.
    Gone ... or have I?

Reading between the lines, you seem to accept that this £170 was owed but that you were unable to tell, from your final statement, whether or not it had been recovered.

That being the case, ask them for a clear and concise breakdown of your final statement.

If they can show it wan't recovered, then of course they're entitled to ask you to pay it back. But, due to the period of time that has elapsed, you can always plead hardship and ask for time to pay it over several months?
  • Thanks very much Biggles all advice is appreciated, it's their tone that p*sses me off the most to be honest and it's their error!
