First Direct Mortgage

We are First Time Buyers and had an offer accepted on a house on 12th August. There is no chain at either end. We have had to go through account security checks as our mortgage payments must come from a First Direct current account and we are new customers.
We got a text today saying our mortgage is agreed subject to valuation. Our offer documents will be issued to us and valuation instructed within 14 working days.
I e-mailed our solicitor a few days ago to confirm they have received our forms, ID and up-front payment. They said they have and are now waiting on contract paperwork from the vendor's solicitor.
Will the solicitors do anything before the valuation/survey is carried out?
How far away are we from getting a moving in date? We currently rent an apartment and have to give 2 months notice (if handed in before the 28th of the month) should we wish to end our tenancy. We were hoping to be able to hand it in before the end of the month and get into our house at the end of November.
