Asda Opticians

Hi I am due an eye test and probably need new glasses. I am very short-sighted and have saved loads of money by going to Asda in the past as they fit thin lenses without charging extra. I wanted to check whether they still do this? They no longer have any information on their website so I was worrying that they have stopped it? Anyone any recent experience?

I needed to get a first pair of 'Office prescription' glasses, but all the places near my office were quoting prices anywhere from £120 (Boots) to £250 (SpecSavers).

On the off chance, I rang Asda Opticians who said they did a range of £50 frames, which would cost a total of £79 for varifocals, so with my £55 eyecare voucher, that would cost me £24 (I thought).

I popped along to my local store and saw their optician straight away who asked me to pick a frame from their £50 range. He checked my prescription and said that since the prescription was very basic and the difference between the intermediate and near additions was only 0.75, they could do the office lenses for no extra cost. He even insisted on giving me lens cloths and cleaning wipes to bring the whole cost up to £55, so that I didn't lose £5 value!:D What amazingly good service. I'll be going back to Asda Opticians from now on!
  • As others have said they do fit thinner lenses as standard. However, I'm really really short sighted & have found that Asda can't deal with my prescription. I ordered some new glasses a while back from there & when they came into the store, the lenses were awful & still very thick. They kindly sent them back to get new lenses fitted, but still the same issue.

I guess it depends what you class as really short sighted.

    Yes they do.

My OH is a locum optician across a range of stores (asda, specsavers, boots, independents...) and always recommends asda to family when they ask which is the best price/value for money.

Been going to them for the past three years and cannot fault them on price or service.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Last year I had four pairs for what I usually paid at Specsavers for two pairs.

Specsavers do a bogof, but this does not cover thinner lenses or anti-refection coating (which cuts out the rings round higher prescription lenses). To save , I used to order two pairs but order one set of medium grade thinner lenses (including coating) and one set of standards with coating, having one thinner lens in each pair of glasses.

However, Asda's price included full sets of the thinnest lenses, with coating, for all four pairs supplied.

The only problem with Asda is that they have no retinopathy test equipment, so I have until recently used Specsavers, but have converted to Boots (small branch), as their appointments are more convenient (and I found the service more personal). Then I buy the glasses from Asda.
