On the opposite side of the coin I always think it's a waste for a person to spend £5 on a meal just for themselves and have lots left over which they chuck.

Oh I find bulk buying saves alot of money.. I do both.

I use Aldi as my main supermarket, can't really go buy in bulk from places as I don't have transport and I don't fancy having to lug everything up a hill :D:D

I think it would help if you could go foraging for food, where I live there are lots of wild blackberry bushes, and this seems to be a great year for blackberries, i can easily collect a couple of KG in an hour or so.

It helps if you have a freezer to store them in, obviously make sure you don't pick any by roadsides as they may be polluted with traffic fumes, if they are not near any farmers crops they will probably be organic too.

I think it's very hard if you're starting from empty cupboards and have to buy full packets of staples like rice, pasta etc. If you're pricing up the cost of each meal, then that's quite a bit easier. I've lived for a week on £7.50 roughly, but that was me pricing up what my portions cost, not the cost of having to buy the whole big bag of pasta in one go, if that makes sense. I didn't eat very well though, but it's possible and it's possible to do it for less, but your diet would be pretty bland. Lots of beans on toast haha.
  • My diet costs about £2.70 a day.

I have removed my original comment and must apoligise to jack_pott.

I missread jack_potts post and was convinced it said "My diet coke costs about £2.70 a day."

Sorry, I can't see how a pound a day could cater for all your nutritional needs.

I'm currently on around £2.50 a day now I increased it slightly as I re-arranged what I was buying to ditch an unhealthy snack

Surely its just about eating the best possible diet with whatever amount you can afford. Veg soup, bread, porridge apples and some protien are fine if you are really skint.
Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.

Are you a professionally qualified dietician? I'm not, but I just wondered how much store to place on your view.
The only thing that is constant is change.
