ps3 play multiregion bluray

Options
What is the best way to make ps3 play multiregion bluray?

I know there is that dongle you can buy but is there any other better ways?

I have a japanese 20gb version so it is multi region ps3 games and is backwards compatible ps2 and ps1 games but only for japanese games, the region free is only for ps3 games and not for Blue rays.

Is it worth getting it chipped?

It can't simple as that, you would have to get said dongle.

Although you need CFW on it too.

Plus I've never actually seen the dongle.

    What is CFW?

There are loads of chips on the market some very cheap like £1.25 but you have to fit it yourself. something I am not confident about.

But I thought there were lots of different options these days for making it region free?

Custom Firmware - bit of a grey area probably to talk about on the forum, YouTube would be your friend.

Nope, with regards to the PS3 bluray, there are not loads of options at all.

Some of the chips I have seen involve 20 odd different solder points, this was some time ago I admit, but I wouldn't fancy doing that job.

Cant you just look for region free blu rays or ones that are region A, B and C?
  • What about games then, I have the earlier model ps3 which has a ps2 built in, so it should play all ps1,2 and 3 games. But mine only plays jap ps1 and 2 games, but it is region free ps3 titles.

I remeber with the ps1 towards the end of its life there were loads of options to chip it, same with ps2 now there are disk sliders and all sorts.

What are the ways to do it with ps3? Can you do the disk swap in any way to past security?

Only PS3 games are region free.

PS2 and PS1 are locked to their regions.

Nope, no disc swap that I am aware of.

I may try and pick up a ps2 for a £10er off ebay.

But I wish there was a way to play other region blu rays.

Most blue ray and dvd players these days have a hack or something you can find online to play other regions, is there really nothing for the ps3?

I wish an expert on here could tell me all the options? That usb dongle or a chip or is there any software I could download

Sorry you dont think I am qualified enough to answer your question!

To use that dongle, you need to have installed custom firmware on your PS3, as I said look at youtube for videos. If you haven't updated your PS3 firmware, and it is still on 4.41 you may be okay to carry out this custom firmware installation.

There is no software, the PS3 has been out since 2006 , if any software was going to show up it would have done by now.

Thanks mate, yes I have not updated my firmware so I am looking at going down the road of the dongle to make it region free for blu ray.

Yeah, thats what I said, if you have updated the firmware then the dongle wont run as it needs custom firmware installed for it to work.

YouTube is your friend on this one, just type in the name of the dongle, there are numerous videos however it doesnt just work off the bat, you need custom firmware which by the sounds of it, you are now unable to install.
  • Custom firmware can be very risky, I haven't done it myself but there was a custom firmware that put consoles into a demo mode so they couldn't run any software or even do anything including re-flashing. Quite funny when you think of people looking to rip off the games killing their consoles. :D
