From two jobs to one

Hi, back in February I was sent two tax codes as I was working for two employers. I now have a full time post with one of these employers. Should I tell HMRC of the change in circumstances, I have handed in my P45 from my other employer with the tax code 444T and the one my employer has used until now is 500L so it all adds up right?

    Handed in to whom?

It does for a split tax code, yes.

However you should contact HMRC and explain that you now have one job and don't want the tax code split any longer. They should then issue a new tax code.

The employer's guide on this advises that the P45 should be returned to you and you should be advised to send part 3 to HMRC. Not all employers are aware of this so they may do something different.

    From http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/helpsheets/e13.pdf

"If an existing employee gives you a form P45 from a second job they have just left you should tell them to send the P45 Part 3 to:

HM Revenue & Customs Regional Post Room St Mungo’s Road CUMBERNAULD G67 1YZ

We will review the tax code and issue an amended one if appropriate. "
  • Thank you, I'll ask for the P45 back tomorrow and send it to HMRC.
