Possible silly question re mortgage payments...

Hi, hope someone can help me, I can't find the answer by searching the forums!
Are mortgages paid in arrears? So the payment gone out today actually covers last month?
Never really thought about it before & am slightly confused! My fixed rate ran out on 31 Aug & I've dropped down onto the SVR, so was expecting this month's mortgage payment to be less, but they've taken the same amount as when I was on my fixed rate.
Just thought I'd ask here before I ring the bank & make myself look silly!
Thanks!
