Advice on negotiating internal job salary increase

I'm in finance and a qualified accountant

I've been in role for a couple of years and have accepted an internal job in same wider team

It will be at the same grade, but I want to try and push for a decent salary increase. The number I have in mind will be a 15% increase

I've heard that some get nothing but the myth of 10% max I've heard off too.

I believe on an external market I could achieve my ask, but how do I play this card without sounding if you don't give it I'll look outside?

Also on the internal job board they sometimes state salary. However the banding £ can be different for each department ie sales is higher than finance. I've got a couple of examples of same grade and the average of these would be similar to my ask.

So any advice welcomed.

    Try your luck but you maybe disappointed, as it sounds like a "sideways move", ie same pay band.

    From my experience working in large companies, they will try to hit you with an increase of 1 point on the pay scale, if anything at all. To get a decent raise, rule of the thumb is, you need to jump ship.
  • Just ask.

    They will have a budget to go up to, and if you don't ask, you won't get. Ask in a good way - I would e-mail and state something like "can you confirm what the salary of the role is? I was hoping for a salary of £xx". Then put points as to why you are desrving of the higher salary, such as your knowledge of the company as well as the savings the company would be making in agency fees in taking you on etc etc.

    Think of the figure you want, and add 10%. Then when they negotiate, they are more likely to be closer to the figure you had in mind.
  • I would focus on being offered the position first and then have my points prepared, however, you may find that the salary is just that, you either accept or do not in the world of budgets etc. As an accountant, I am sure you will have good insight into budgets and how they work etc.

    Do you have legitimate access to the budgets, forecasts and HR data, those documents should give a steer on how to handle initial negotiations. Or it could be worth asking for a nominal rise, then at the next annual review, try and justify another rise based on performance, improving processes, increasing revenue etc
