Forced Unpaid Leave

Employees should have been given the choice or forced to have taken a days holiday pay.
The options are:
a) complain either on their own or with other members of staff if you and say that you expected it to be paid leave and the company were not clear.
b) Ask for holiday pay to be paid for that day
c) Ignore it and move on if the company are decent to start with.
The problem you have complaining on ur own is that it effectively makes you look heartless and could put you in the bad books even though legally you are correct.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -

Thanks for all the comments,
To clear a few things up, nobody was really forced to attend, people wanted to attend he was a very popular member of the team and had worked there from finishing school.
It's really just a matter of the MD appears not to have had the thought or balls to tell his employees about the intention on not pay them. For my OH it wasn't about the lost days pay, its just the lack of communication on the part of the company.
People would have then had the choice to take the day unpaid or to use holidays. The funeral started at lunchtime but as the company closed for the day people could not work till lunch
Small companies do get away with things along this company as people would rather keep employment than cause a fuss.
To be fair to the MD, he is usually overly generous with his staff and is always the only person buying drinks on staff outings so maybe everyone expected this not to be an issue so didn't even think about pay and time off.
Anyway, due to ill feeling in the office yesterday, the MD has reversed his decision and all will be getting the lost days pay this week.

We all make mistakes, its how we react to those mistakes. The MD did the right thing in the grand scheme of things.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0

Forgot to mention I do like Prothet of Doom's idea about demanding the company double the missed pay and giving it to charity!0

Glad to hear the MD has changed his mind!

When anyone says the premises/office will be closed best to ALWAYS ask 'will we be paid'Thanks for all the comments,

I suppose under the circumstances (a work colleague's funeral), perhaps some people thought it was not tactful. But if I hadn't been there long and didn't know the worker from Adam, then I would be miffed about not being paid.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £16,087.170
