How many 'safe' sick days in a year?

  • Yes, the Bradford Scale is used by a lot of employers and takes no account of what the illness actually is. It is worked out as:

    A = instances of sickness
    B = total days of sick
    C = Bradford score

    A x A x B = C

    So, 7 separate days off sick makes a score of:

    7 x 7 x 7 = 343

    If this had been one period of sickness lasting 7 days, the score would have been:

    1 x 1 x 7 = 7

    Employers usually set their own "trigger" points where they will take action.
