Tinned foods & small utensils that can be kept in their own room.
During the holidays I would start a box and stock up on things that i liked when they were on offer - espencially the practical things above.
Mum and gran helped out with things like phonecards (in thise days) / mobile top-up cards nowadays. Stamps also a good idea.
Not so much a hamper idea, but I studied away from home - but I really appreciated a hand written letter / card from them even (if it was just what had happened that day!!! but this really was like a wee hug hug from home ):j I feel I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe :j0 -
Something I've just remembered. I used to let my Boots points accumulate during the year, and then take my niece there to spend them before she went back. We checked the amount on going in, and then she would get what she wanted. Varied from hair straighteners and other electronic bits to very basic toiletries. She loved it, and it didn't seem like spending anything for me.0

loads of dried staples (pasta, rice, cous cous etc) and things like ketchup, worcester sauce, soy sauce etc.
My mum made me a lovey hamper last year for Christmas (I'm not at uni and it's a slightly different situation I know) which was amazing. How about something like that for Nov/Dec time? Mine had expensive soups in, bread sticks, crisps, j20s, chocolate, mince pies, a yule log, microwave puddings etc in.
dfMaking my money go further with MSE :j
