Letter from BPO Collections

Hi,

New to the forum and rather stressed and confused at the moment.

A couple of days ago I received a letter from BPO Collections for the amount of £1,475.75, from an old property I used to rent, which I left in 2007 without informing the housing association, due to being involved in a religious cult, I just left.

Now in September 2013, I receive this letter.

Obviously they have located me, what do I do first?

Don't panic, this is an easy one; if you last had any contact with them in 2007, the debt is probably already statute barred or very close to being so. This means that if you haven't made a payment on the debt or acknowledged the debt for at least 6 years, then the debt is statute barred. i.e. Recovery of the debt is not enforceable. If you're close to the six year limit, then stall them for a few months('return to sender' on the envelope) until 2014, when it will definitely be statute barred, then just send them a letter stating you will not be paying because the debt is statute barred. Plenty of sample letters on this forum and the internet.

A bottom feeder debt agency turning up out of the blue is usually a sure sign the debt has become barred.
If it is, they will know this and refuse to acknowledge the fact, so send one letter and then ignore anything but court papers.

Is it the rent or Council tax they are chasing?

BPO collect old arrears on both.
