Help needed to get rid of ciggie smells and marks

Short intro
I exchanged my bungalow for another in a much more convenient and beautiful place ...BUT I knew the previous tenant was a smoker it didnt look too bad, but now Im in its horrible, smells like there ashtrays everywhere and the windows have a film of nicotine on them thats like someone painted them with a stained varnish....

They left in there carpets, and vertical blinds and some curtains I think thats where the smells coming from.....

Ive opened windows doors scrubbed and scrubbed but to no avail, Im worried the smell will go into the upholstery of my cloth settee and my mattress which Im in no position to replace.

Any ideas or hints tips on how to tackle this problem, I was on the point of giving up the tenancy and go into private rented it made me feel so bad but have got my head round that this where I have to live or the other alternative is , well there is no alternative, I chose to move here so have to live with my decision I just dont want to be smelling like an ashtray, Ive never smoked in my life but as you may well have guessed make stupid impulse decisions, so any hints tips to sort out the bungalow with the fag stench from hell....>>
Life is looking good, finances are stable for a while, smelly bungalow smelling fragrant and bank balance still low but solvent...in a good place till something else happens :p

Paint the walls, professionally clean the carpets, wash the curtains. It'll go eventually it just takes a few weeks. Use vinegar to wash the windows and frames.

    Xmas Saver!
Place bowls of vinegar around the bungalow. It will smell like a chip shop for a while but it takes the smell of cigarettes away. Wash down things with baking soda. Use Fabreeze on the carpets etc.

Wash all the walls and ceilings with sugar soap.

  • I remember watching Kim and Aggie clearing out a heavy smokers house and after washing down the walls they sprinkled bicarb of soda on the carpets left it for about an hour then hoovered it - appears that bicarb of soda absorbs/neutralizes the smell.

    Good luck.

  • We had the same problem when we moved into this house except it hadn,t been decorated in 25 years and the whole family had smoked, so it was 25 years worth. The bicarb of soda works I sprinkled it everywhere left it for a day then hoovered it up and that was just so we could bear to be in it to start stripping wall paper.

Remember if you are decorating ceilings put on a coat of oil based paint first to seal in the nicotine stains.

Scented candles around the place helps mask it. I must have used dozens of bottles of flash with fabreeze in it.

  • Lemon grass oil also helps neutralise the smell, but you will need to wash down the walls/repaint to get rid of it permanently.

Thank you, just need to pluck up the courage to start, worst thing is everything I own is in there as I can't afford any storage and my lovley bed settee etc is absorbing the stench of the place.

I just want to walk away from it.......but can't..Im stuck here oh boy do I regret this moving here..

My life was bad enough before this but it feels like I've hit rock bottom and can't get back up...ah well I hope the perfume of nicotine is popular my clothes smell of it now, even my friends commented today.
