The whole lot becomes due all at once. If you can't pay that then they go to court to get a liability order then if you don't pay that they may send the bailiffs out to try and take some of your assets such as a car on your driveway. Don't answer the door and don't let them in. They won't be able to take anything. If the bailiffs can't take anything from you the council may try and take it from your pay packet directly. If all that fails to get payment...not much....especially if you genuinely cannot afford it....but that means not paying any of unsecured debts and not having a luxury lifestyle at all..i.e no Sky, no drinking, smoking or going out. If you can afford it and don't want to pay and would would prefer to spend the money on going out then you may go to prison for non payment as a very last resort.

    Xmas Saver!
You have until the end if the month to pay it. If the payment us due in the 1st of the month it is not overdue until the last day if that month. Can you make any payment at all ? Even if it is not the whole amount ?

I think its two missed payments before they send an order for the full years to be paid at once, but you'll need to pay it, even if its late.

As far as Im aware your bank account can also be frozen if the debt is passed onto a sheriff officer (in Scotland anyway)

Im not sure what sky, drinking, smoking and going out have to do with this, I agree that people need to prioritise their spending but sometimes things happen, like unexpected bills

If you dont pay it, Im sure they can continue to chase you for it into the next financial year. In Scotland they dont mess around if you dont pay, even two late payments, not missed payments can see the whole lot being handed over to a sheriff officer and you'll also pay more as they'll add a fee.

Its better to pick up the phone and say you are struggling than just not pay and do nothing about it.

Someone who is working must prioritize council tax very highly...only just below food and rent. Council tax is a bill that is expected and comes in every month. All other things are a lower priority. If they send you a means enquiry form and you put down sky, smoking and drinking on it they will deem that you can afford to pay and think about putting you in prison.

I get a reminder with 7 days...then a final notice giving a further 7 days to pay the full amount of council tax then the council takes court action if still not paid.

ring up your council they may re-balance the remaining installment plan for you so you either pay more (to cover the missed month) from next month or extend into the 11th or 12th month.

Agreed. Much better to be proactive when you know you'll have a problem paying.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

So ive been having a few money problems latey and am unable to pay my council tax bill, does anyone no what will happen. This will be the first time ive missed it, ive just had a bad month at work.

If this is the first time you have missed/being late then you will be send a reminder notice - this notice gives you 7 days to pay the missing amount. If this is not done then you lose the right to pay by instalments and the full years balance becomes due. Fail to pay this and a court summons would be issued.

If you haven't already done so then , before you lose the right to pay by instalments, you can make a request to have you payments spread to the year end (and they can't refuse at this point although they can insist on a written request).
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Thanks for the replays I'm going to ring them today and ask if they can spread it over my remaining months, I got hit with a big bill and was not expecting it.Thank you for your help.

If you dont currently pay by direct debit, ask them to set one up.. With my council they tell you that they will reschedule the payments and write out with a new payment plan & dates (so may affectively give you a months grace)..
  • Hi just to let you know I phoned today and they were great, I will miss this payment and will only get one free month next year. Thanks for your help.
