    As above.

I also was able to claim straight away, it depends on the exact reason why you were sacked. Dismissal in itself doesn't mean you deliberately did yourself out of a job.

In this case he did though, he went against company policy and was aware of the consequences in doing so.

The OP did not state s/he knew this to be an offence resulting in sacking. Trying to stop someone thieving from your employer certainly isn't the worst I've heard - best to disclose to the Job Centre in full and let them make a decision. After all, in this case, it's their opinion which counts.

Now, if the OP had been sacked for theft, it would be a different story.

JSA seems to be a law unto itself and I think their decisions take more into account than simplistic basics.

I have voluntarily left 2 jobs in the past 5 years and claimed JSA without problems. Perhaps if I had worked in a less specialised role things may have been different. Just as the steps on the agreement for me were ridiculously few when compared to others.
  • i would contact acas to check your employment status with this one. if you have nothing in writing stating you cannot apprehend shoplifters, then HOW do they prove it was a VERBAL agreement, you haven't signed any agreement. I'm surprised that they didn't go the disciplinary route rather than a straight dismissal that maybe another angle you may wish to explore legally.

The OP has not posted since #1 and has not said whether they were employed before 6 April 2012, the day the law changed. The two year period was not a retrospective change.
