Rear bike carrier for Mini Cooper

Hi can anyone confirm that a rear bike carrier (hooks on over hatch and under car) can be safely fitted and used on a Mini Cooper? Halfords hesitated because the plastic spoiler "may" be damaged and funnily enough BMW's suggestion was an £800 tow bar system!!!
I'd prefer to use a rear carrier than emptying the car and taking the wheel off the bike to get it in the car.
Have you got one ....is it ok?
