New Zealand lamb - where can I find it ?

Fed up with paying £6 per pack for tough organic British lamb chops in Sainsbury's we went to Lidl for grass-pastured GM free New Zealand lamb chops instead and they taste great.

OH went to Lidl yesterday and was told NZ lamb was being replaced by British.

Since it's quite legal to feed non-organic British lamb (even Red Tractor) with GM feed we're on the hunt for New Zealand lamb, fresh or frozen.

According to mysupermarket, Sainsbury's Basics New Zealand lamb chops are 4.99 for 800g but I haven't seen them in store - are they frozen ? Anyone tried them ?

Sainsbury's is also supposed to have 500g New Zealand lamb mince for 3.49. Not seen this either, is it frozen ? Anyone had it ?

Any other stores you know of which have it please ? We can get to Sainsbury's, Morrisons, small Co-op, Tesco, ASDA and Iceland in our town. Next town has Waitrose and Aldi. Town bit further away in one direction has Farmfoods.

Already checked Ocado and they only stock NZ lamb liver and kidneys. :( Iceland delivers here but doesn't have NZ lamb according to website range. I looked at ASDA and Tesco websites couldn't find any NZ lamb specifically either.

Help needed please ! xx

Have you ever thought of going to a butcher, or buying direct from the farm online?

  • It might be worth bearing in mind that most New Zealand lamb is halal, and they don't feel the need to inform us of this fact on the pack.

British lamb is lovely and easily bought from farm shops.

I didn't know this and, now I've done some reading, it makes me very sad. I was vegetarian for years but it didn't stick, but I always felt less guilty about eating sheep because I knew (or read somewhere) that they can't be intensively farmed in the same way as chicken or pigs. Now I discover they are slaughtered inhumanely because of a ridiculous sky daddy!!

I guess I need to do a lot more reading about animal slaughter - and I think being vegetarian is becoming a reality once more.

I didn't know that about the halal thing in NZ meat ^ not that I eat meat and shouldn't be in this thread..

As lamb is a seasonal product I presume it's now cheaper for English lamb to be stocked more this time of year, as it's being shipped from the fields around now :(

That's because too many people hear half the story and jump to the wrong conclusion.

What have you got against New Zealand halal lamb?

I am not going to get into an argument so I probably shan't come back to this thread. I knew that was a danger when I gave this information. Halal slaughtering is inhumane, if they are stunned first then it is not true halal. I used to work with a moslem, he gave me this information.

We have the choice if it is organic/non organic, that is marked on the packaging. The fact it is halal SHOULD be marked on the packaging so we can make an informed choice, we should not be forced to go halal by default.

And yes I have seen animals slaughtered, I was often on a farm when I was younger, and a lot of people feel that slaughtering animals is cruel full stop. Again that is about choice.
