parts left by washer repair

my washing machine, which is still under guarantee, had to have a new drum casing because it was leaking. however the old part has been left at my home by Hoover/Candy repairman. it's huge very heavy and I have no way of getting rid of it. According to Candy:
"I can confirm that it is standard practice for the engineer to leave the old drum when a new one has been replaced, as these are classed as your property".
I wouldn't have a problem if it was the drum, I could just leave it outside and someone would take it, but this is a huge piece of heavy plastic, which I cant lift!

I've written to the head office but just wondered where I stand legally

Well it is your property, and you no longer want it.

Perhaps phone up your council and ask if they have a large objects waste disposal scheme (or something like that).
Most councils do, and they charge for it.

Maybe look in your local paper for a 'rubbish cleared' advert.
    Again you'll have to pay.
  • thanks for the reply, I just don't see why it should cost me money to dispose of a part, that's been left through no fault of mine.

I can sympathise, I really can.

But can you imagine if the repairman took away something like that and the householder kicked up about them having stolen their property?

    Seems like they can't win.

    It is your property.

Did you ask the repairman if he could take it away?

I don't see how it is still OPs property, it has been swapped for a working item so the faulty item becomes the property of the manufacturer.

The council will probably require the rubbish to be on the curbside. I know when I wanted an old sofa taking they refused to take it from my house.

The repairman would need a waste carrier's licence if he had to take away all the worn out/damaged parts he replaced.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • I've never heard of this before, either personally or to any of my family and friends. It's ridiculous, what would happen if I was a frail old lady who lived on her own?

  • it isn't made of metal, its hard plastic, if it were metal I know I could just leave it outside the front of my house(if I could move it) and the 'tatters' would take it, probably within an hour!

...what would happen if I was a frail old lady who lived on her own?
Post #2 offers a couple of suggestions which will also work for frail old ladies.

It also shows that the new part was fitted by leaving you the old one.

You must know someone who could move it outside for you surely.
