Please don't feel like you have to spend the same amount of money...that isn't what this site is about!
Perhaps a stadium or club tour? signed photo of a player/team? Shirt/clothing from his team club shop? tickets to a match? sky sports subscription for 3 months or something? hamper (see hamper sticky on special occasions board - its huge)? a night out with the boys?
There's plenty to choose from. You haven't really given much information apart from its a man, and they like sports.
Try a google search perhaps?0 -
A first anniversary is traditionally marked by a paper gift (may just be for marriages) so a ticket for something is a nice idea or a photograph printed up in a nice frame.
As already said, don't feel you have have to match the amount spent as you may as well just swap the £40 and each buy something for yourself.0 -

If he like gadgets, maybe a little box of tricks
My OH turned 40 recently & I made up a box of 40 gadgets, you could do something similar with say 12 things in a nice box, one present for every month you have known & loved him?!
I bought most of the gadgets on eBay for .99p, the only thing was a lot of items came from HK so you would have to plan ahead and buy things early to make sure they arrive on time.
Good luck x0
