When you consider that yo get a whole years online gaming with chat, live support, online gaming with friends (and enemies) then IMO its worth twice the price.
I could not go to the pub for the evening for the cost of one whole years subscription.0 -

I used to find that the xbox dashboard was far superior to the ps3 interface (in terms of content and usability), but Microsoft's current offering is an abomination. It looks slick, but it is very sparse on content and full of adverts.
Xbox live promotions and game sales are fair enough, but actual adverts taking up space that could have had useful content? I don't like being sold to advertisers and paying a subscription.
There also used to be lots of videos from ign and oxm etc easily accessible. Now there are one or two hidden away out of view.
You're right that the yearly subscription is not crazily expensive and online gaming is good, but as Gold Dust said the ps3 managed ok for free. I think Microsoft could do much better in the other areas though.0 -
You get what you pay for, I don't recall xbox live being down for a month due to being hacked!
The chat and party system on live is great and for a little more than £2 a month it's a bargain imo0 -
If you look on eBay there are a few cheap deals on, one guy was selling the code for £19.98 and he sent me the code via email.. worked a treat!0

Ebay isn't covered by digital transfers so no protection if things go a bit awry, and they often do, especially where junk hotmail folders are concerned. You pays yer money and you takes yer chance. ElectronicFirst every time for me.0

At renewal time I got MS down to £17 for a years subscription, just by being non-committal and saying I wanted to leave and wasn't that bothered by the content on offer.
That was calling direct, to cancel, and getting put onto their retentions team..0 -
Just got a 12 month code from Ebay for £26.49. Emailed within 2 mins from tak-ltd.
Usual warnings apply as per albionrovers' post above.
Have used electronic first in the past as well with no issues.0 -

Bethesda (makers of Elder Scolls e.g. Skyrim) are currently in negotiation with MS so that Elder Scrolls Online wont need a Gold subscription. Nothing has been confirmed yet mind but given the game isnt out for a while there is plenty of time to reach an agreement.0
