Jobseekers allowance question

Hi, basically i've just left school (i'm 18) and have been accepted for a job as a trainee merchandiser at tesco, however I don't officially start until the 7th of October. Would I be able to claim jobseekers allowance until this date, as I'm not in work however i'm not looking for a job either?

Sorry if this has an obvious answer :o

Cheers

you can but you have to be looking for work so you can do so but have to accept a job if you 'find' one before you start at Tesco

I would ask your advisor about this - in my experience they are able to pay the run on until you start work. They're also able to help with travel costs (usually for your first month) and can provide money for work clothing, although I assume you'll have a uniform? They pretty much never offer these things, but if you catch someone on a good day then they are able to help.

I haven't actually signed on yet as person below just highlighted, which might be the problem unfortunately. But as you said if i catch someone on a good day you never know, i'll give them a ring tomorrow to confirm :) Thanks

My advice would be to sign on and go through the motions. As you have a job to go to in early October realistically your job search will be limited to look for just temporary work. As you have a job lined up, I expect the JCP advisers wouldn't be all that bothered in your job search activities before then.

Yeah that is a good point, considering it is only a month as you said i don't think they'd be massive fussed over such a small length of time, if it was 6th months then that'd be a different matter.

    My recommendation:

Spend the time you have before your job starts reading through MSE, instead of trying to trick "the system".

You won't get paid for reading MSE (main site and forum) but you can get an incredibly solid foundation on all things financial that will do wonders for you in years to come.

You might even come across some short-term money-making opportunities on MSE.
