ID'd for a 12A DVD

Had to share this as I'm still baffled.
Went into Sainsburys last night and decided to treat my mum to a DVD I knew she wanted. When I went to pay for it at the self service I was asked for ID to prove I was over 25.
I asked why I needed this as its only a 12A and I certainly look older than that. The cashier said that Sainsburys has a Think 25 policy on all age restricted products.
Is this correct I thought think 25 only applied for alcohol and cigarettes?

Sounds as if the assistant was a bit clueless.
You don't have to prove you are over 25.
If the assistant thinks you look under 25 you should be asked to prove you are old enough to buy the relevant product.
Even then it seems a bit daft to extend that policy to something you can buy at age 12 but I suppose they think that's easier than having to get all the staff to remember a table of product v age v appearance threshold. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

That's what I said to her.
I said do I look over 12 she said yes but still wouldn't sell me it untill I proved I was over 25.First Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
As Azari says you only have to provide proof you're older than 12 but anyone who looks under 25 should be asked for ID

I'd have walked straight out the shop leaving an entire trolley's worth of food half scanned, half in bags, and wholly in chaos.
How utterly ridiculous. There's a great thread somewhere about trying to buy a sachet of 'red wine sauce for chicken' from the Co-op (alcohol content about 0.0000001%).
Vote with your feet people. Do not be bullied or harassed by supermarkets, their restrictive and moralistic policies and their clueless staff. I've never had this sort of [Removed by Forum Team] in Waitrose."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

I think you should have pointed out that it's a 12A therefore you can watch/buy it provided you're accompanied by an adult. Which you are. Yourself."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

They don't ask you to prove you are over 25 - they ask for ID if you look under 25. The ID you show must prove that you are over the age minimum age to purchase the product you are buying.
As Azari said, they stick to one age-verification policy for all age restricted goods in order to prevent confusion among staff. A single simple policy is much easier for staff to be taught/remember/apply than different policies for each product - so it leads to fewer mistakes.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

Although thats the policy. As the OP has said the shop assistant told her she had to prove she was over 25 not 12. That is the purpose of this thread!0 -
