CSL debt collectors

Help required please, we had a knock at the door from CSL today, they want us to return the call to them, we have no debt and completely unaware what the debt could be.
What are the best questions to ask them when we ring ?
Any help greatly appreciated

    I wouldn't ring them.

Send them something along the lines of this and have a copy to hand to anyone else that calls by:

I'd just say you don't discuss such matters on your doorstep and ask them to write to you.

Even a prove-it letter seems premature at this point as they don't seem to have provided any details whatsoever about any alleged monies owed.

A prove-it won't do any harm, but why bother if they haven't discussed the matter appropriately?

  • what should I do next then, are there set questions to ask over the phone?

General advice is not to telephone them at all but to either write or to wait for them to write to you.

What did the card say? did it mention you (or someone from your family) by name?

If you really want to telephone them then I would simply say you have received a card, quoting the reference from the card and saying that you require all/any communication to be in writing through the post. Don't get in to details with them about any alleged debt.

  • As happy_bunny says, don't ring them. Write instead.

    Also, don't sign the letter.
  • yes it mentions a name and a bank. How do you get the info out of CSL ?
  • How do you get the info out of CSL ?

In your shoes, I'd wait until they write, using my details.

However, since you appear determined to contact them, send the "Prove It" letter, linked to earlier, but don't sign it.
  • hi bedsit bob, we are not determined to contact them, just feels like what we should do to clear our name etc....
I really appreciate the replies from everyone but this is the first time this has happened and we don't want to make a mistake.
Why do you not sign the letter? everyone says it, but what is the importance.
  • just feels like what we should do to clear our name etc....

Why would you need to clear your name etc., when you haven't done anything wrong
Why do you not sign the letter?

Because it's not beyond the realms of possibility, for your signature to be grafted onto a CCA.

In your shoes, I'd wait for a letter from them.

If a letter does arrive, and it is in someone else's name, send it back unopened, marked "NOT AT THIS ADDRESS".

Only act if/when you get a letter from them, addressed to you or yours, by name.
  • Many thanks Bedsit Bob, great advice from all.

I understand the signature stuff now.

Really helped - Thank you, we will await a letter I guess.
