Toothpaste without flouride

I often use Elgydium toothpaste, but often hear negative comments about using a toothpaste that does not contain flouride.
My dental hygienist seems to think its more about the brushing technique than the toothpaste .
I know dentists often kindly give opinions on this forum so wondered what is their view on this or other non flouride toothpaste ?
Thank you

  • I use Euthymol which I quite like, it doesn't have that nasty minty taste but not everyone likes the taste.

Fluoride is unnecessary, damaging and harmful to health. I suggest that you read up on it. I filter the damn stuff out of my tap water because of the adverse health effects.

It is only the Anti Plaque version of the toothpaste make that you use that doesn't have fluoride, the other varieties they make do have fluoride. If I was you I wouldn't worry about not using fluoride because your body doesn't need it and is better off without it.

Do you know that you can get better anti plaque protection, reduced gum disease and significantly reduced tooth decay by supplementing certain strains of bacteria? They destroy the decay and plaque forming bacteria which prevents the problem at source. It's only because of the make up of bacteria in people's mouths that they get dental problems. That and far too much sugar in their diets which shifts the balance of bacteria to more harmful ones.

Dental plaque is a protective environment built by bacteria to prevent them from being destroyed, it's a type of bacteria biofilm which do similar things, filtering out bactericides and other things harmful to the bacteria and providing a community where bacteria and yeasts/fungi cooperate and benefit one another. There are biofilms within people's digestive systems and it's why some diseases are so difficult to remedy because drugs are filtered out and never affect the bacteria after the first encounter.

I would ignore the scare stories about fluoride. Fluoride toothpaste is responsible for the largest reduction in decay rates. It helps prevent decay and without it, no matter how good your brushing technique is, you are not reducing decay rates. Brushing well will reduce risk f gu disease but not so much decay. I would not use a toothpaste without fluoride in. Always have and I have not gone mad or developed a debilitating medical condition.

poster number 2 I feel WADR is misinformed.
bacteria cause an immune challenge to the body. That immune response is seen clinically as gingivitis. If bacteria is present on your teeth the body will try and fight it and thus the progression to gum disease occurs. Supplementing good bacteria is a falsehood as far as I am concerned re the mouth. Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day is proven to prevent decay and gum disease.

You are in one of the few areas that does have fluoride on the water. Fluoride in the water is a completely different argument to fluoride in toothpaste. The vast majority of the more rational anti-fluoride water people agree that toothpaste is the correct place for fluoride to be.

If you were brought up in the Midlands, around Birmingham, then the chances are you've already benefited from the fluoride, but unless you have reverse-osmosis equipment installed in your water supply, you are not getting the fluoride out. Simple 'Brita' type water filters do not do it.

Toothpaste with 1100-1450ppm fluoride will greatly benefit teeth, with no adverse heath effects.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

All fluoride products used in toothpaste (and water for that matter) are highly purified pharmaceutical grade chemicals.

Where they happen to come from is irrelevant.

Oxygen is also a contaminant of metal processing - but would you want that removed from the air you breath? :D
