CII R05 Financial Protection Exam

Has anyone here had any experience of this in the past? Any tips?

I've failed it three times now. I know a lot of stuff, I'm working in the industry and have read the 171-page book a couple of times but have always been terrible at exams (I failed my driving practical five times and my theory three times!)

Next attempt on 29th.

I hope that's a figure of speech...but if you've failed the exam three times but only read the book twice, I think your problem is not enough reading.

Do you have some example questions? If so, practice them - and if not, try to get some.
  • Yep, I have this exam under my belt..

What exactly do you do within the industry?

    How have you been studying?

I work for a bank opening investments and liaising with providers for IFAs to get protection policies activated and rolling.

Mainly studying through reading the book. When failing you get a sheet in the post saying what areas you did well/not so well in so I then try read up more on the areas that were my downfall... but then the next fail sheet came through and it was all backwards. The areas I studied and did bad on before got better and all the areas I'd previously done well on were now my downfall. Seems the question set that falls on me counts for a lot. Just find that the questions pull a very specific line from the book and it could be anything.

    Do you use revision mate?

Have you sat their chapter tests? Have you done their mock?

Have you utilised any third party material - like Aviva academy?

Completely agree. For every CII exam I've done I've read the book from cover to cover at least three times before sitting the exam. I make my own notes on the third read through and then revise from them. I learn visually so I draw little pictures beside my notes to help me visualise things during the exam.

And I stick post it notes all over the place with little nuggets of info on...by the kettle...in the car etc. I find this helps me learn the boring stuff, like the names/dates of Acts, court cases etc.

You just need to find what works for you. Once you've got the formula right you should be able to pass any of the CII exams.

Probably too late now but I hope you passed this time.

I've passed all the R0 exams from 1 to 6, as well as CF6, first time for all of them. For several I didn't even finish reading the book, as the text is so dry and dull. I did use Revisionmate a lot and I like the Aviva material which you can download for free here. Also try the practice papers from Brand which are pretty close to the real thing - I found doing lots of practice papers was far more helpful than ploughing through the books.

Currently studying for J02 and AF1 in October.
