DO NOT IGNORE your bills!
Leaving them to mount up just makes any lender less likely to want to help, if you are struggling..
also the interest, fees, recovery action gets harder to handle / stop, further down the line.
Pay SOMETHING- just a nominal amount each week/ month, even if not 'agreed' by the creditor, shows you are trying to pay off amount due.
KEEP IN TOUCH. Dont need a life story, just need to now realistic payment dates / any changes to circumstances-
and your address! if moved house, dont forget to tell people, so bills go to the right place!
a short term arrangement can avoid long term woes..
Lastly.. TRY TO BE NICE - we are all human, after all.. except maybe the tax office :-))

I agree with the tips given, I've never worked for a financial institution but I know the tips work. I had financial issues in the past, but by keeping in regular contact with the organisations concerned it meant I was never threatened with debt collectors and I did not get any defaults or late payments on my account.
Even the tax office are reasonable if you talk to them. Especially if you ring them first. My best piece of advise ref the tax office is every couple of years ring them and get them to check the tax you have paid. It is cheaper than any accountant. If you have had gaps in your employment during that time, you may find that you get a nice cheque.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0
